31st December 2011 Morning mist
I am contemplating the view from our terrace : in between two years, time seems a little slower. Doesn’t it ever stop for a little while? Just a second, before the new year starts? To give us a little respite so we can look back, be thankful and remember happily things past before looking forward, ahead, to things new… in the New Year!
1st December 2011 Black diamond or truffle time
The truffle fellowship has just opened the season at the ‘Hôtel Dieu’ in Carpentras on the 19th December. The Tuber Melanosporum, the queen of truffles, demands limestone soils, heat and likes to grow underneath holm oaks. This is where it feels at home, in Provence, around the Mont Ventoux. The market takes place early in the morning and the black diamond changes owners very quickly. Its price can range, at the beginning of the season from € 180, to around € 400 in mid-season to as far as € 800 at the end of the season in January.
Therefore it would seem wise to consider buying a truffle oak!

The month of October – a month for connoisseurs and hedonists
In Provence, we are blessed every day by the incredible strength of the sun. Days shorten, the sun is softer and coffee terrace visitors slowly decrease. True connoisseurs and hedonists appear then. In 25°C, under blue skies you find them at “Au Pied du Ventoux” reading their holiday books, throwing themselves in the pool to finish off with a glass of red wine at barely 4pm.
10-17th September 2011 Hiking and French lessons!
A week filled with sunshine: the magic formula was 3 hours of French and 3 hour of hiking. Four very motivated women were keen to take part. Each morning after breakfast, we put on our walking boots: Bédoin, Le Beaucet, Venasque, les Dentelles de Montmirail or le Mont Ventoux were part of the plan, followed by lunch with a glass of rosé on the terrace, a little nap and then French lessons – you could see the heads steaming – in the common room. Finally, we rounded off the day with a good meal and a moment observing the stars.
13th August 2011 Resting
The five families who arrived on the same day soon found each other. It all started while having drinks before supper on Saturday evening: people were chatting and laughing… Finding surprisingly common interests, they drank to that with a little red wine and soon fell under the spell of a warm night lit by stars and candles. Ever since then, they’ve been enjoying a real holiday, visibly relaxing further hour by hour. We take a lot of pleasure in listening to the sound of their voices and distant laughs coming from our terraces.
22nd May 2011. Pandathlon challenge
Today, the WWF France organised the 2nd Pandathlon, a race in teams of 4 people. They had to go up and down Mont Ventoux (27,5km and 1600m altitude climbed) starting from Bedoin. The aim was to raise money for biodiversity (1,600 € per team, in total 150,000 €) and contribute to the WWF France actions, especially those organised in the Alps and the Mediterranean eco-regions as well as in the area surrounding Mont Ventoux. Visitors could not only enjoy information stalls but also many culinary, musical and theatrical demonstrations.
From 1st to 14th April 2011 Watercolour show in Pernes-les-Fontaines
Three weeks after his own exhibition in Velleron, Jacques Williet appeared as the guest of honour at the Watercolour show in Pernes. In 2010, he came out as the winner of the show.
Our clients, who have already taken part in one of his watercolour courses, particularly enjoy the way he patiently puts himself in their shoes and gives wings to their brushes.
Jacques Williet will be teaching watercolour at “Au Pied du Ventoux” from 7th to 14th May.
5th of March Buzzing
Time flies by so quickly ! Winter, very mild this year, has gone pretty fast. Nature has just about had time to rest. The days are getting longer and the sun feels warmer. People are coming out of their homes, walking round in the streets and dawdling in the markets. They gather in busy cafés terraces. Far away, you can hear their buzzing. Bees are behaving just the same, joyfully meeting in almond trees and delighted at the taste of the first nectar.
11th December 2010 Have you finished all your presents ?
It is now high time and that’s precisely what we thought. So we went to the Franco-German Christmas market in Caromb where we tried Bretzel and German sausages. We bought bawbles for the tree, cinnamon liquor, an essential oil burner and stars made of straw. It was also possible to make your own Christmas wreath, a pretty exotic thing to be doing in Provence where everything is light and warmth. We wish you all a very warm and happy time before and during Christmas and afterwards: A happy new year!
6th November 2010 A play at the bar
Yesterday evening, there was a theater play at the « Bar du Siècle » in Mazan, named « On ferme ». A restaurant-show. After a little dinner, the actors quickly took over the old wooden counter et turned it into a stage. They showed us what we have known for a long time: the bar is the root of France. It is where you find true relationships between people, where you find the politicians, the revolutionaries or the unionists calling on the strikes. They write books or do business, while drinking coffee or a little cheap red wine… it’s like a second home.
4th October 2010 Our honey is ready!
Robert has been spending hours on end in his ‘honey workshop’. Whilst spring honey is already on everybody’s lips, we’re still waiting for lavender honey. After centrifuging the honey and letting it rest, the beekeeper has finally filled the pots. It is a nice and easy reward for him after the long and difficult season, particularly when he moved the beehives at night. They weigh as much as 50 kilos each!
Enthusiastically, the beekeeper runs up the stairs proudly showing his first pot of honey.

Au Pied du Ventoux welcomed the Radio and the Press
A while ago, a couple of clients came and exclaimed “you are at the end of the world”. Climbing up the stairs through the garden, they discovered the open view and rephrased “oh no, more like paradise”. Apparently the word got out…
Yesterday two radio reporters from Northern Germany came to meet us. They were doing a report on the myth of the Ventoux following the steps of Eric Caritoux, born-and-bred in Flassan and once stage winner of the Tour. They wanted to ask our opinion on the subject.
And today, two “La Provence” reporters made an appointment to interview us. They are writing a series of articles on “beautiful hikes in Provence with suggestions of friendly B&Bs”. They really liked the location of “Au Pied du Ventoux” and the warm and motivated owners who speak several languages and are open all year round.

2010 Festivals, big and small, in Provence
What is more beautiful than to walk in the summer atmosphere, stopping here and there to watch or listen during one of the many festivals – big or small – that occur in Provence in the summer? There are big theatre festivals in Avignon, the “In” (fairly classical) and the “off” (more innovative), smaller festivals but no less interesting and friendly, in Bédoin (Crions Z’ensemble) or Pernes (Font’ Arts), but there are also all these spontaneous little celebrations that happen because of people’s “joie de vivre” or because it is summer and Provence is the best setting for that!
25th June
The colour ‘green’
As one knows, Provence is very rich in colours. At the moment, ‘green’ is the most noticeable one. It can be seen in paths, vineyards and cherry trees. Its intensity and brightness, especially in the sun, are so impressive and varied. Fascinated, I think about all the painters, whether famous or unknown, who, attracted by light and colours, have been coming to Provence for centuries.
the 19th of May
10:30am, 21°C, sun, blue sky, slight breeze.
Esther and Frank, Karin, Hans and Martin meet up outside the bicycle garage. During mealtimes they have got to know each other while laughing together and so they have decided to ride together: Gorges de la Nesque, Col des Abeilles, St-Hubert, Col de Mûrs, Col de la Madeleine, Malaucène, Suzette, Brantes, Montbrun, Col de l’Homme Mort, plus all their usual circuits. They have all gone up Mont Ventoux. Personally, I particularly love the way the women arrive in the evening, for “apéritif”, all dressed up with matching shoes!
Easter 2010
Mum, tell me, who hides the eggs in the garden ?
Well… it’s very easy. On Holy Thursday, church bells fly to Rome. For three days and three nights they remain quiet until mass on Easter Sunday. Then, they go home loaded with delicious chocolate eggs, bells or chickens. Luckily for us, during the flight many eggs get dropped which we find in our gardens. It’s very simple, isn’t it ?
Christmas 2009
Christmas is coming, we are soon going to decorate the Christmas tree.
Every year, we set up a nativity ‘crèche’ with little figurines, called ‘santons’ in Provence. We always go and buy two new ones in Vaison-la-Romaine: ‘santons’ are traditionally painted or dressed in real fabric clothes and, in the past, they used to represent the different professions. It is only much later that the nativity set came amongst them. The first ‘santons’ market took place in Marseille. Merry Christmas to all and a very happy new year!!!
Professional training in French from the 17th until the 24th of October
My goodness, how time flies! August and September are far behind and already we are in October! At the end of the season, four brave people came to improve their skills in French. Six hours a day they studied, and the time went quickly reading lots of long or short texts, listening or speaking, practicing grammar or playing games, and also interviewing the inhabitants trying to unearth Provençal secrets. You were great, I really enjoyed it!
On the 1st of August Magic at… „Au Pied du Ventoux“
Harry Potter and Hermione Granger at « Au Pied du Ventoux »? You could almost believe it. This morning, two little Swedish boys and two little German girls got together to act out some of Harry Potter’s adventures.
Full of enthusiasm, they tried playing Quidditch and doing magic, improvising with a broomstick and some hiking poles as magical tools! The morning flew by. So, a clever mum discreetly set a small meal on a table in order to feed the little magicians!
On the 20th of July: Congrats! The etape du Tour Mondovelo climbs the Ventoux!
Today, like an enthusiast on the main road in Mormoiron, I saw hundreds of cyclists go past, old and young alike. Relaxed faces where you could see pride, smiles and joy. There were also a few cyclists who were reaching the limits of their endurance. Amongst them, I recognised Josy, Jacques and Bitchi. A whole crowd of people had come to applaude and encourage them. The Tour Mondovelo, a ‘small’ dress rehearsal of the Tour which will be climbing the Ventoux on Saturday, gathered 7500 cyclists this year. They did the same job the pros will do on Saturday. They had the chance there to realise their dream, without sponsoring, without doping, without show-business, supported by their family and friends who came and camped on the side of
12th July ... that's summer!
A great variety of butterflies flutter around our garden, they arrive, feast on the baking summer sun and gentle breeze, glide over the blue lavander and finish by the terrace after a pause by the swimming pool... to the delight of our guests who, in fact, exhibit more or less the same behaviour. Many of them take their cameras out to capture them on "film", just like me!
25th May
Cherry season has arrived in Provence. The cherry trees are full of these delicious red and aromatic fruit. Everywhere in the orchards, you can see the three-legged ladders and the carts, home-made by the boss himself, being used for picking. The foreign workers, mainly from Spain, silently labour away in the heat. In the morning, you can see their feet underneath the cherry trees and in the afternoon, their heads are poking above the tree tops.
Flassan, as well as Venasque and Malemort, are cherry villages. In Vaucluse, the varieties picked are Burlat, Summit, Van or Belge. Yesterday, for our dessert, we had a clafoutis made with the whole cherries, including the stones, as they keep the full flavour of the cherries!
21st March 2009
Spring is here at last. The almond trees are in full bloom, the cherry trees are showing their first delicate pink and white flowers. The sun is also at its best. Just on time as clients are soon to arrive for Easter.
The man of the house is frantically using his Kärcher, the woman is dusting her saucepans. Everybody is spring-cleaning at “Au Pied du Ventoux”. This year, the first English lessons start on the 4th of April, hiking shoes are on the ready, waiting to be worn. Welcome to Flassan.
24th December Outing in the snow on the Ventoux
Monsieur Ventoux has put on his white coat for Christmas. The snow starts at a 1000 meters and at the top, it’s 2 meters deep. What a pleasure it is to go up there and walk in snow shoes or even ski! At Chalet Reynard there are very few people, at the top, no-one. But to go up there, it will take you three hours of hard walking. Your efforts will be rewarded by a splendid view of virgin snow, the scintillating crystals in the sun and the pure fresh air of the Mediterranean climate, all that for your eyes only.
22nd of November
After our last ‘summer’ customers have gone and once calm has settled over the house, I sit down and remember fondly the pleasant times we’ve had with our clients. Some of them come back regularly, several times a year even. It’s an affair of the heart. There are some who even became friends while staying here and have organised to meet up in our house the following holiday.
Dear clients, what brings you here? Is it the warm air full of scents, the breathtaking sunsets, the distant view over the countryside, the outings, the walks or rides, the little grocery shop in Flassan or the evening drinks…?
We are always very happy to be able to offer the setting and share with you the pleasure of living here. Thank you very much.
the 26th of September 2008
The Tour de France on the Ventoux in 2009 : it is now official !
All our clients, particularly the cyclists among them, will be delighted by the news. The 2009 Tour will have a stage in the Vaucluse, on the 25th of July, the last stage before the arrival in Paris the following day!
1st August
Ha, ha.
A feeling of farewell at « Au pied du Ventoux ». Six children from three different families met up here and spent two fantastic weeks together. The parents were left with little authority over them! Resigned to their fate, they agreed to spend every other day lazing around the pool. That of course meant: no driving, feet up between swims, marvelling at the view while reading a good book, eating salad for lunch with a glass of red wine before taking a nap. What a life!
Tomorrow, more families will arrive with six more children…
June 9th
Our heart beats for Belgium ! This year once again, Franky and his troop came to stay with us. A very happy and friendly group. The men have been playing football together for years (1979 until 2005) but now, for age reasons, they cycle. Their aim: to climb the Ventoux! The wives who, full of initiative, used to accompany them at football matches and now follow their bike training were also here, on their way to markets, cafés and local exhibitions. In the evening, around the traditional pre-dinner drinks, everybody had so much to tell. Cheers! (tchin tchin!)
From the 10th to the 17th May Watercolour lessons at « Au pied du Ventoux”
And nothing is as it used to be! The world is now divided into primary and secondary colours: the mountains in the distance are blue, the “cabanon” (small stone hut) is in the foreground, the bushes in the middle, and the big tree is already in the background, or is it the blue mountains first and this big tree there in the middle? The doors in the village are no longer just doors, now they are blue-grey, green-grey, olive grey, gun metal grey doors. And those shadows! They are to the left of the door, to the right of the door or behind the flower pot next to the door.
Or may be it is us the shadows that glide through Flassan… to stop in front of the door and immortalize it, but with wet on wet or dry on wet?
from the 12th to the 19th April French lessons and hiking
from the 19th to the 26th April hikingBlue sky, sunshine, slight breeze. Two groups came: the first one to take part in French lessons in the morning and hike in the afternoon; the second, to hike full time! All really enjoyed the time they spent together. As if they’d been friends for ever, they learnt, copied and interviewed people in the village. Even after their day’s work, they played board games in French. They loved the paths chosen for the hikes, particularly when those lead them, “perchance” to a small village café. Much more demanding were the all day hikes, in the “dentelles de Montmirail”, around St Armand or climbing up the Ventoux!
April 5th
A pleasure for the ear at the foot of the Ventoux. We had a group of musicians staying with us. After the dessert they unpacked their instruments: two accordions, a clarinet and a keyd fiddle. Tilman told the curious audience all about his medieval fiddle. We spent a wonderful evening together with our guests and we were all carried away by the happy sounds. That night the melodies of Margarete’s accordion were still ringing in my ears as I went to bed.
March 24th, Easter Day
Flassan in the snow. Winter in Provence! What a surprise for our guests when they opened the doors leading to the patio this morning: no blue sky, no sun and only a misty view across the hills. Instead, they experienced a snowy and chilly day. The weather reminded us of the year 1956 when one million olive trees froze in Vaucluse in the middle of a frosty February. Worried about their income, many farmers at the time switched to cultivating vines. With a glass of “Côtes du Ventoux” in our hands we sat around the fireplace and listened to lots of interesting stories.
17th january 2008
It’s crazy ! they’ve started singing again. In the morning, the birds wake us up. It is sunny and warm. Flowers are growing, you can smell the soil, the landscape is changing. In the afternoon, we sit on our terrace in Flassan, in the sunshine and gaze at the horizon. Behind us, the giant Ventoux is serene, its top covered with a blanket of snow. Winter sport addicts come at the week-ends to have fun on the blue, red and black « pistes » or on the sledging runs. A real sporting meeting spot ! In the evening, metal caravans curl down the mountainside back to Marseille, Orange or the otherside of the Rhone.
21st December
Christmas is coming. Everybody is getting ready for the big celebrations: Christmas markets in every little village, Avignon by night under its Christmas lights, exhibitions of handmade "santons" figurines, provençal flute music and of course Papa Noël who really descended from the sky in Vacqueyras…
We're looking back joyfully and thankfully towards this past year. Watching all the good-bye photos of our guests, we feel as if you are here with us as we celebrate Christmas now.
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year in 2008
16th November
The Beaujolais nouveau has arrived in Provence and with it, autumn. In the morning, the mist rises above the valleys. A little while later, the sun appears. Wine makers in the area open the doors to their cellars and invite you in for a tasting. It is now time to think about Christmas and check the stocks.
The truffle trade has started with the first ones being found. In Carpentras, the price is (with haggling!) around 380 Euros a kilo.
But don't you dare venture on your own into the forest on Sunday mornings or at dusk! Shots and dogs' barking can be heard in the distance. Everywhere hunters hide and look out for possible targets. But don't worry, all will end well. The wine, the game, the truffles. In four weeks, the big celebrations bring everyone together, them and us.
18th october
Now is the time to catch the last rays of sunshine before winter. The vegetable kingdom is still obstinately showing its splendour, aware that autumn, getting closer, will eventually rob him of his leaves and colours. The light is soft and velvety, the view clear and far, sunsets red, with three exclamation marks! Our clients swim in the pool in the afternoon, yet, I saw them wearing gloves and headbands while jogging in the early hours. La Provence… a region full of contrasts!

1st-8th September
Watercolour painting at « au pied du ventoux ». The first watercolour course took place this week. Three eager women, between 18 and 74, came for a week to learn to paint, for 4 hours a day. The teacher, Henri Giraud, who himself discovered his passion for watercolour 20 years ago, immediately inspired them. Starting with easy techniques and slowly becoming more difficult, amazing paintings were made.
In addition to this, we also went on a guided tour of the Mathieu ochre factory in Roussillon, a hike to Bedoin, shopping at the market in Vaison-la-romaine and a few other outings.
15 of August
All our clients responded happily to a spontaneous invitation to a « special apéritif ». Had they already noticed something?
At 8:00 pm, 10 adults and 5 children, with glasses full of pastis, kir or grape juice awaited, full of curiosity, that we revealed the plaque we had fixed (almost unnoticed) that day.
Drum-roll. Applause. Flashes… “PLACE DE L’APERO”
Now, the place where we serve « apéritif » before dinner has found its name. Indeed, “l’APERO” is spelt with capital letters in our house.
1st of August
Today, we can look back at our first three months at “Au Pied du Ventoux”. Such a pleasure to welcome so many friendly clients! Clients from Belgium, France, Germany, Australia, England, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Spain and Switzerland. Our youngest client was Louise, 6 weeks old and our oldest was Guy, 85 years old!
What did they appreciate the most?
The spectacular view, the peace and quiet, the thousands of stars, the possibility of meeting others and exchanging plans for the day or just simply chatting while having breakfast or dinner together.
12 of July
Now, motorbikers also carry us in their hearts. The first two groups of bikers came to stay: 7 French bike-lovers (5 women and 2 men) with wide smiles. They came from Lyon and the Ardèche and met at ours, so the journey wasn’t too long: anyway, they were more interested in enjoying the road to get to the Ventoux than speeding here.
2nd of July
« Mummy, where do holidays live ? » « When does lavender bloom ? »
These are essential questions in life. The short answer: “here, now”.
You can see that in Provence we really live “here and now”.
We have just come back from the lavender festival of Ferrassières. Lots of questions were asked there about essence. The essence of the real lavender, which likes to grow above 700m in altitude, in the region of Sault, is used in the perfume industry and in beauty care. Not to be confused with its hybrid “le lavandin” (400m-700m) which is used mostly for washing powder purposes. The third sort, “la lavande d’aspic” (200m-500m) smells like camphor and is used in the making of paints and varnishes.
Do you still have any questions?
17th May
Here, the weather is beautiful for riding a bike. Anyone who can ride a bike is out on the road at the moment. Amongst them were our clients Torsten Walter and Mathias Wotzlaw of Cologne. The friendly pair, both enduring sportsmen, took part in a competition organised by the French Cycling Federation. They were to cycle up the Ventoux 5 times in 24 hours (starting from Bedoin, Sault or Malaucène). They went up 4 times during the day and once in the night. It was great! Congratulations to both of you!
2nd of May
Then, the first customers arrived, on foot of course, as “au pied du ventoux” is next to the GR 91 (long distance footpath). They came from Malaucène and were heading on to Sault. The walkers liked our cooking and really enjoyed the view. I overheard one lady say: ”It’s great here!” We started on the right foot!
1st of May 2007
It was great at the “pied du ventoux”! About a hundred people, of which 20 Germans and 80 French, came to celebrate the opening of “ au pied du ventoux”. We danced Madison, Rock’n’roll and “the bear” following Isabelle’s accordeon. Bernard lead us singing “au pied du ventoux, in the sun, at midday, we always have some fun...” a modified version of Joe Dassin’s “Aux Champs-Elysées”. In between, we ate. Everyone loved our paella and the cakes... after midnight!
